if he won he'd appoint his own successor, so short-term no impact but a pretty big one in the medium-term.

But WV gov is such a uniquely powerless position. Especially compared to 50th senator

Manchin does something that the party disapproves of. Story at 11.

Does he think that he had any chance to win, or would run be mostly just a fundraising vehicle, giving him $ to spread around to gain more local power?

Would you want to be in the Senate right now as a moderate Dem from a red state. People are quitting the Senate left and right, no pun intended.

I think he’s running for Governor of WV again. But in 2024, most likely. This is probably more to rattle Justice’s cage.
-
There’s also his age to consider. Manchin is 72 now, less than a year younger than Trump. While he could run for Governor in 24, one could argue that he sees 20 as being his last legitimate chance to run for Gov

Manchin would not be guaranteed of winning, and if he lost, ge'd still have the seat, correct? So Manchin winning would hurt the party, and thus Dems in WV would be incentivized to vote against him. Rs would be incentivized to vote for him, which would make for a weird election.

Assuming Dems in WV even want a democratic majority in senate
