The Founders hated drawn-out multi-month presidential election controversies so much, they amended the Constitution in 1804 to change the process after the first time they had one.https://twitter.com/daveweigel/status/1440373674062737419 …

Can anyone make a good argument - not just shouting "the founders!" and waving your arms around - why we need a drawn-out multi-month ceremony for certifying the election? https://twitter.com/MattGertz/status/1440368886226964481 …

Worth recalling that they expected the electors to exercise independent judgments, not to be a pro forma thing. There is a strong argument imho, given the changes since then, to make it all automatic.

I'd support that. As with codifying a nine-Justice Supreme Court, eliminating faithless electors would bring the written Constitution in line with the unwritten constitution of longstanding practice.

I think if we’re going to do it we should also bind the electoral college votes to the winner of the popular vote in a state. States can have the latitude to do either the ME/NE system or the other 48 system, but the scheme needs to be adopted pre-election & state legislatures

Can’t just appoint electors or choose some other system divorced from the popular vote.

Also agreed. In general, we should have only the narrowest possible emergency paths to post-election controversies.

I agree. You can’t do much about a 2000 scenario where the results are almost a statistical tie. But you can otherwise eliminate them.
