That’s a reasonable concern, but add to that the problem that they only had one organizing principle: loyalty to a state that no longer existed. And the level of political indoctrination in the officer corps was intense.

Yep. I did a paper on this, in the spring of 1992. Being a college student, it wasn't a very good paper.
