The China thing may be less of an issue. Senior officers reaching out to their opposite number during times of uncertainty is not unprecedented. (Talking about it...well.) But going the Full Schlesinger makes me itch - and makes me ask where SECDEF was.

That is the least problematic part of all this. Mil-to-mil contacts (including "trust me, we're not going off here") are normal, and Milley might have done a very good thing here. Mattis literally said "yes, sir" and then hung up the phone and said "we're not doing that."
