"Post hoc, ergo propter hoc" is hard to disambiguate, even in the moment. 9/11 -> Afghanistan -> Iraq (for mostly made-up reasons) sure put a spin on things.

It's kind of wild! Numbers might be a bit inflated b/c of expressive responding (e.g. I hate Bush so I'm gonna say I agree with every bad thing) But I def don't think that's all of it. And expressive responding like that is its own kind of problem/unhealthiness!

Some of us just don't sit right with things like Operation Northwoods, or blank visa applications being greenlit for Saudis who were flagged by terror lists. 19 cave dwellers with box cutters didn't make the most well funded defense infrastructure in the world fail.

Worth remembering that college education and the parties were aligned differently in 2006 than now. The non-college people still believe in the conspiracies - they’re just on the opposite side of the partisan divide now.

I’d be interested to know if a subset of those who were Dems in 06 fell into the category of people who voted for Trump. Over the last 15-20 years, there has clearly been a shift in portions of the base between both parties, with a fair number of former Dems going to Trump/GOP.

Show me a respect Democratic politician or person of influence who espoused those conspiracy theories. I'll wait.
