Revisionists tend to exaggerate Lee's military shortcomings, just as the Lee cult tended to airbrush everything but his good points. Besides tactics, what Lee understood best was morale, specifically the morale of men fighting a rebellion.

Lee was never a great strategist, but then, the Confederate war effort was ill-considered from the outset, & many of his possible strategic choices were constrained. Which, come to think of it, was the situation of US generals in Afghanistan.
