Yeah, no worries, I was just trying to tease it out—I think if you really take the quote seriously, you end up with Marx as a quintessential intellectual of modernity—*the* quintessential intellectual really, along with Freud (ok, Nietzsche too). And he embodies Jeet’s list.

I remember it being very religious in nature (hence Feuerbach), but I'll reread the piece!

Feuerbach carries a lot of connotation in this debate because he was both a harbinger of secularism and an important influence on Marx.

Yeah exactly. He’s key for the early Marx.

The different reactions to Trump within the conservative intelligentsia don't map perfectly onto old divides but they do suggest that those divides still have influence.

One of my long-running theories is that a great predictor of being anti-Trump was being anti-Harriet Miers. That covered both the people who hated populists (eg, Frum, Will) & those of us who took a stand on conservative rigor over team playing.

We Harriet opponents vehemently rejected results oriented talk. That is what united us. Hostility to notion that there was no principle to be protected. In other words we rejected Flight 93 talk in Oct 2005.

Thursday before nomination was announced John Fund was on a radio show, mentioned possibility. Seemed so preposterous I completely ignored it. Almost fell of the stairmaster at the gym when I heard that it was really going to happen-think it was announced in GMA. The *HORROR*.

And Dan is right. Rarely listened to Rush, but caught every second I could at lunch, wanted him to put pressure on, but he equivocated pretty aggressively. Hugh Hewitt was all in, even though he obviously knew better. Real harbinger.

Remains an enormously misunderstood moment in the politics of the last 20 years. The story still hasn't been written properly. I have the receipts.

So do I. That was the fight that got me promoted to the front page at RedState back in the day. I do mean to write it up at some point.
