War of 1812 ended about sixty years of war over the Lakes. Hard to grasp today how much strategy & effort went into conflict over them

Didn't end there! Wellington spent a good bit of the 1820s-1840s devising Canadian defense strategies - fortifications, plans to fall back and raise militia, plans at preemptive invasions - but he always argued that control of the lakes would be crucial.
