fwiw, I had the same experience on the "not knowing what curry means" thing. I grew up in a traditional Indian immigrant household, and never ate anything called curry until my friend's mom made me "Indian curry". I had to explain to the poor lady that I never eaten "curry".

My cousins and brothers all have similar experiences, where curry is some foreign dish. Curry is probably more British than traditional Indian in its current form.
