Jefferson Davis married Zachary Taylor's daughter, but she died young. PGT Beauregard was engaged to Winfield Scott's daughter, but her parents interfered, then she died young. Would things have gone differently had the marriages endured?

Nope. All of the elites on both sides were connected, except maybe Lincoln. Nothing mattered other than him.

Even then, the Todds were a prominent family in Kentucky, and Mrs. Lincoln had half-brothers in Grey.

I'm not suggesting the war goes differently, but maybe the choices of individuals. More Beauregard than Davis. Davis was not likely to change his spots.
