It was literally Taney's argument that the existence of discriminatory laws proved that free black Americans were definitionally not citizens, rather than treating their exercise of key aspects of citizenship as the starting point.https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1424723653346873348 …

i know your whole thing is to be incredibly dishonest at all times, but you know as well as I do that the citizenship of black Americans was a live question for the first 80 years of the US, and varied depending on state and custom. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1424722495366631424 …

You can argue that free black Americans were not citizens under the laws of *some* states, but that is a different question.

If you're moving the goalposts from "there were not black people living as free citizens" to "not all free black Americans were citizens under the laws of their states," then you've conceded the point.https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1424726715906076679 …

I've written about the citizenship clause of the 14th amendment, which overturned Dred & settled the question of whether states could have different definitions of citizenshiphttps://www.nationalreview.com/corner/constitutional-originalism-requires-birthright-citizenship/ …

I often wonder why smart writers engage with racists on twitter who have 30 followers. I think smart writers like @jbouie should reassess engagement with racists who have 68.7K followers yet have less than 250 likes on their two year old pinned tweet. It's a form of platforming.

There's no concession here unless you're eliding the distinction between "legal resident" and "citizen," or characterizing it as a distinction without a difference, which of course is sheerest howling nonsense.

Bro did you even read the tweet that you QT’d to start this nonsense? The point you claim jamelle is ‘conceding’ is the one he made in that tweet. He’s right you’re just blatantly dishonest. Or your reading comprehension needs serious remediation.

He needs to declare victory after yet again publicly taking a dump down his own pantleg somehow, stealing the other guy’s position and claiming he’s copying you now is the lowest effort way of doing that
