Andy Slavitt, ex-White House Senior Advisor for COVID response, to CNN on Florida's rules: "He did this, Ron DeSantis, at a time when it seemed like the cost would be low because he thought COVID was over. He's now learned the hard way, and if he had any sense, he'd backtrack."

Do you want to defend DeSantis’ recent legislative and rhetorical efforts regarding the pandemic on the merits? I’m curious how you would do that. To say he’s popular doesn’t tell us much—Cuomo too has been popular.

He's continuing to promote vaccination, having prioritized the elderly first. FL is more vaccinated than any neighbor closer than Virginia or New Mexico. Overall COVID deaths per capita & unemployment both below US avg. As close as anyone to right balance of liberty, safety.

You aren’t making the basic narrative/historical distinction between his mediocre job earlier—middle ifvthe oack—his terrible job when he decided to posture by blocking businesses from doing vaccine mandates. That was pre Delta—so now the state is screwed.

Your premise is that it is incumbent to use compulsion rather than persuasion on people who have not willingly taken the vaccine so far. Do you take the same view of all people & groups objecting to compulsion?

So some dopey globalized right to “object to compulsion” is not the question. As you know. It’s about this pandemic and these vaccines. That also precludes the need to “understand” those who aren’t vaccinated, regardless of who they are—it’s not personal.

Time to bust the union, thenhttps://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/566024-new-york-state-teachers-union-opposes-staff-vaccine-mandates …

Lol—you think that’s a gotcha?!? I’ve tweeted about this constantly—in opposition to the union! Of course, they’re wrong in this case. And I know more about unions then you would know if you lived to 1000. Ok—what else ya got? So you’re in principle opposed to vaccine mandates?

This is not some quirk of the union, it's doing exactly what public employee unions are designed to do, & it is likely to be the reaction of teachers' unions in most places where mandates are in the offing.

We can have that discussion another time, it’s a distraction now. Do you oppose vaccine mandate in principle? In all cases? In some cases? By the state? And private employers too? What say you?

They're an extreme measure we should avoid whenever possible. I did disagree w/DeSantis on the cruise ship issue bc cruise ships present a unique setting wrt diseases. But if you can't impose mandates on govt employees, what makes you think you can do it anywhere else?
