Former Warsaw Pact states & Soviet republics have a lot of the same problems we have, *plus* a distinct history with the tyranny of the Left, some of them preceded by authoritarian or police states of the Right. Worse, they have neighbors like Putin to deal with.

No doubt, but there is this key difference: member of NATO. Cannot be counted on to support other NATO states against autocratic/xenophobic groups. Which was the U.S.' issue until January, as well. The other members are not lying when they say they're relieved that we're "back."

I feel the current Anti-anti-Orbanism trend is another data point showing that some on the right are turning against democracy and want a strong man to combat changing cultural norms. In other words some people want to burn the village to save it.
