Participation trophy generation is coming of age
Periodic reminder that it was baby boomers too sensitive to handle their Woebegonnian children not getting the trophy who instituted participation awards. As someone now coaching youth sports, I assure you, they’re not for the kids.
I'm super confused why so many smart people don't understand that most of this reaction is celebrating the autonomy of the athlete and not the idea of quitting. It's honestly very strange.
Look at the power structure in how Larry Nassar was allowed to abuse his victims before @R_Denhollander spoke up and so many others followed. The good thing happening here isn't that Simone Biles didn't compete, it's that she felt the freedom to make the choice for herself.
I have no real issue othe than people celebrating her bravery nonsense. It wasn’t brave. She need help fine, go get it. But don’t blow smoke up my rear end about how THIS is what makes her a great champion. Movement of weakness, sucks for everyone, not champion behavior.
