Shame that the limestone exterior was largely looted. https://twitter.com/ArtifactsHub_/status/1417791065285791745 …

That would actually raise really interesting questions about historic preservation. The pyramid is notable in part for the fact that what you see was built 4,700 years ago. But would it be right to restore it, using original materials, to how it looked when new?https://twitter.com/ComradeArthur/status/1417992702839377921 …

Egypt should do a restoration project. Or does limestone no longer exist? https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1417991675524395008 …

One downside of restoring the Great Pyramid to its original form is that it would be too slick to climb it. Pictured: Franz Joseph, at age 39 (in Egypt for the opening of the Suez Canal) climbing the Great Pyramid in 1869:pic.twitter.com/6u32iPmrpd

I've pondered that. For example, if you were to restore Rome... what year?

All you need to do to understand why it will never be rebuilt is to visit Cairo. Its a nice Cosmopolitan city, uts biggest and most populated city in all of Africa but, well, its like what would happen if Manhattan had a baby with Tijuana.

Ship of Theseus question, if you replace a boat plank by plank is it still the same boat? I ask this all the time because Israel is doing this with artifacts that are destroyed by looters, reassembling them and augmenting, But I wonder if it holds the same significance

Ancient Greek statues used to be painted, but it was the weathered, paint-stripped marble versions that inspired Roman classical art.
