Anyone remotely familiar with anti-vaxx sentiment in general, & COVID anti-vaxx in particular, knows both that 1) right-wing anti-vaxxism is a real problem & 2) anti-vaxx is nowhere near exclusively a right-wing issue.

Notice Tim doing the thing where (some) white people are presumed to be making voluntary choices for which they are responsible, but non-white people are not. Vaccines are now pervasively available. Don't pretend that only one of the resistant populations is resistant.https://twitter.com/Timodc/status/1416503792707665923 …
Dan McLaughlin added,
Tim MillerVerified account @TimodcNo shit Dan glad to see you are now concerned about racial equity. I know you think this is clever but people can see thru efforts to distract from the fact that the main driver of the vaccination issue is red states and communities in that have been fed bad info by charlatans 1/ https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1416501187164131333 …Show this thread10 replies 20 retweets 157 likesShow this thread -

The idea that we should mockingly dunk on some ordinary folks who have a bad opinion while weeping crocodile tears for other ordinary folks who have the same opinion, distinguished only by their partisan voting patterns, is everything wrong with Extremely Online Partisanship.

Any political party that contends for a majority will have a lot of people in it who are ignorant, resentful, bigoted, superstitious, and/or just plain stupid. This has always been true of all major parties in any democracy. Half the voters are below average in anything.

"Our voters have excuses for their dumbassery, yours don't" is hackery. Everybody has their dumbasses.

As for the
@michaelbd point about public health officials needing to meet all of these vaccine skeptics where they are: facts may not care about your feelings, but when you're charged with moving public sentiment, the feelings of the public are facts in & of themselves.18 replies 12 retweets 128 likesShow this thread -
Put another way: if you want to convince people to stop being wrong, you have to take account of why they are wrong. That includes both good & bad reasons for being wrong. That's as true if you're selling vaccines as if you're selling cigarettes, life insurance, or Jeb Bush.

This is also true, but also not a complete explanation. Anti-vaxx opinion may be more prevalent further down the social class scale, but it definitely has major pockets at all stages of that scalehttps://twitter.com/fredbauerblog/status/1416070086486597635 …
Dan McLaughlin added,
Fred BauerVerified account @fredbauerblogThere's a case to be made that punditocracy (which is super-obsessed with partisan narratives around Trump) underestimates the class (and social-capital) valences of vaccine hesitancy. "Belmont" tends to be much more pro-vaccine, while "Fishtown" is more hesitant.Show this thread4 replies 2 retweets 45 likesShow this thread -

Where there has been success in breaking down black mistrust of the vaccine, guess which strategy worked: 1) Mocking people for being anti-vaxx 2) Reaching out through people they already trustedhttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/getting-clearer-picture-black-americans-factors-overcame-their-vaccine-hesitancy-n1263787 …
