People went back to work *in the Pentagon* the afternoon of 9/11.

Exactly. Cops, doctors, lots of professions people pick themselves up & keep going. Maybe more of them should talk to therapists; maybe more should take a little more time off. But soldiering on after a traumatic event is not a brand-new experience.https://twitter.com/KeithAppell/status/1413205469582307337 …

It's incredible to see so many act this way after 1/6, as bad as it was, when 9/11 was still less than 20 years ago! Given how much worse that day was, why aren't we inundated with stories about that lingering trauma? I'd certainly appreciate that more than this.
-
Recency bias, I guess, but that's not the whole story. Our culture has changed immensely since 2001.

Man up, Buddy I worked in a hospital past 8 years. I see trauma and death everyday.

To be fair though, you can do your job almost anywhere. Bus stations, down by the docks, Men’s lavatory of Shelly’s Back Room...

It's of a piece, I think, with professional athletes recently withdrawing from competition because of mental health issues. I don't doubt that these issues are real. But doesn't it seem like many in this generation are just not equipped to handle stress and pressure?

Crazy Like Us makes a powerful argument that PTSD is to a substantial extent iatrogenic and a culture bound syndrome. If something terrible happens near your home or work you should look at the offer of trauma counseling the way you'd look at the offer of Rx opiates.

That book really helped me smugly solidify my suspicion of counseling.
