No? The souths main reason for succession in the beginning was the election of Lincoln and how he was seen to be a abolishionist. What type of precedent does that set for the future of republics if there member states just leave because there political candidate lost?

Better than the precedent that was set by forcing them to stay: an imperial, centralized federal government.

If I understand correctly, you’re upset that an insurrection to establish a brutal slave empire in the Americas (the plan was to expand into Latin America and the Caribbean) failed and millions in bondage were, as a result, freed?

Why would I be upset about a figment of your imagination?

Did the south secede because they wanted to uphold the institution of slavery, or no?

It does matter. A gaggle of plutocrat crackers dragging their states and the citizens thereof into open conflict with the United States to preserve slavery? Not a legitimate claim to sovereignty. The “war of northern aggression” myth is laughable on its face.

You want it to matter. The bottom line is they wanted to leave. The United States should have let them go and come crawling back when they failed.

They attacked a US Army fort. Apparently you think simply declaring your intent to no longer be a citizen comes with the additional perk of having no consequences for your actions.

The imperial United States killed 600,000 people and destroyed the economies of a dozen states. You can't name anything the Confederates did that justified that. Begone, apologist for the murderous Union.

"You can't name anything the Confederates did that justified that." 1. Treason 2. Slavery 3. Invasion of Pennsylvania & Maryland & attempted capture of the federal capital.
