The United States had 5.3 million people in the Census of 1800. We had 50 million in the Census of 1880. The U.S. had half the population of Britain in 1830. We had 22% more people than Britain in 1870.

Of course, England had healthy population growth between 1830-1870, but (1) nothing like the US, & (2) British population then included Ireland, where a million people starved to death in two years & 2 million more fled the country. That leaves a mark.

On the other hand, the United States in 2021 still has only about 80% of the population of China in 1850.
