funniest part here is that non-white voters support it at a notably higher level than white voters. guess which voters don't support it! that's right: middle/upper-middle class suburban liberals who get their news from vox.https://twitter.com/sahilkapur/status/1406991994568728576 …

If the GOP manages to take back the House and Senate next year (House is very very possible, the Senate is a tougher lift) the first thing they should do is pass a 'slim' Voter ID bill and just see how Democratic Senators start to squirm.

The House is a dictatorship: if McCarthy holds the gavel, he will hold every single vote in his own party (and maybe some Ds too) and get it to the Senate. That's when the fun begins.

The GOP caucus in the House would not lose one single vote on a slimmed-down Voter ID (just that, nothing else) law. Not one. Not in this environment.https://twitter.com/JohnFCoctostan/status/1407100666917621764 …

Here's the tradeoff I would offer, as someone who actually cares about good governance and a functioning nation: Voter ID required (free of charge, and not wildly burdensome like, say, getting a driver's license at the Chicago DMV), and we make Election Day a federal holiday.

Let the states do what they will about absentee/mail voting (me, if I were God-Emperor I'd make all fifty just adopt the Florida model). But there's no reason not to make it a federal holiday IMO.
