True, though that was more because the Mississippi River (with high slave population adjacent) was a key military objective...Alabama's black belt, for example, was left largely untouched until the last months of the war.

The blue area in South Louisiana is about as exact as one can get with the Sugarcane growing region. Cane was the most manpower intensive crop, and required a huge workforce.
