I believe in implication in the film was that Indy was a young man he had a relationship with his mentor’s then teenage daughter. Not pedophilia per say - possibly grey zone in terms of appropriateness.

I always figured when she said the line “I was a child,” it wasn’t literal, and that she was just young, like maybe 18 or 19.

Exactly. If this were a Polanski film, there might be some subtext but here? No.

Sean Connery is only 12 years older than Ford, but played his father. She literally says "I was a child," in the movie. The original script was even less ambiguous on the point.

The reference is to their relationship 10 years prior. If the characters are 36 & 26, it would have made them 26 & 16 at the time. At the very least eyebrow raising if not illegal in most states today.

A lot of people are jumping to conclusions about what is actually a fairly ambiguous conversation. Besides, “official” sources say that Marion was either 27 or 28 during Raiders, which would have maybe made her 17 or 18 if we assume she meant a literal ten years had passed.

“I was a child, I was in love” is such a generic phrase. That could mean anything. How many times have you heard someone say that and they were in their 20s or something at the time they were referring to?

That would matter if he was 21 and she was 12, don't you think?
