One of the largest mistakes made early on was assuming that the virus isn't spread asymptomatically. I'm not a doctor, but it seems that if covid is allowed to spread freely amongst the unvaccinated, it can potentially mutatate into a virus that isn't protected by the vaccine.

Yes exactly- viral reproduction drives mutations. The faster the virus multiplies, the faster the mutations will occur
