The Mamas & the Papas' California Dreamin' wasn't exactly a Beach Boys knockoff, but the Beach Boys' 1986 cover felt like reclaiming something organic to their sound & themes.https://twitter.com/KevinMaddenDC/status/1403433429501362179 …

Speaking of Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty basically did The Byrds’ “Feel A Whole Lot Better” exactly the same as their original, right down to the solo note for note. But I’ve always looked at that as more an homage than a ripoff.

It's a homage but also a sly acknowledgement of people telling Petty for years that he sounded like Roger McGuinn.

I yield to no one (except maybe
@esotericcd) in my love for the Beach Boys, but that cover has never quite worked for me. I mean, I _want_ to love it, but I just feel like it could have been better and was a missed opportunity to really knock it out of the park.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
