1. The Tulsa massacre has definitely been undersold in standard US history teaching. In fact, we tend to spend too little attention on the domestic side of the whole tumultuous period from 1917-25, in favor of focus on WWI, the League of Nations & the 14 Points.

3. There is just a ton going on in that period - Palmer Raids & Wilson's repression & internment, the new Klan, Prohibition, women's suffrage, Harding restoring the economy, the first Red Scare, etc. Tulsa is one of a series of tentpole events of that 5-7 year stretch.

I graduated high school in the 90’s and I don’t think we made it past Reconstruction in any American history class I took until I got the college. In world history, we did briefly touch on WW I & II. When I got to college, I took multiple courses where Tulsa was taught.

Every history teacher has grand plans until they get to Teddy Roosevelt and its April.

Also, this has gotten worse. When I was a kid, it was defensible to skip Vietnam because it was more recent news than history. Lotta water under the bridge since then.

In school I learned that Wilson and FDR were knowledgeable presidents who lifted up everyone. As I’ve studied and talked to more people of color, I’ve since learned that these two were deep racists whose policies still affect us negatively today.

That’s a shame because China is a bigger threat than racism in today’s world and we’re going to need to remember WWII a lot.
