Working backwards in 17 year intervals, the cicadas would have been out in 1783, before the location of the capital was chosen, & spring 1800. John Adams & Congress arrived in November 1800. So DC in 1817 must have been like "WTF did we do picking this place???"

Would they have been around to see and hear them? The government basically abandoned Washington in summer during the pre-air conditioning days, though I'm not sure if they were still around in late May.

Depends where the trees were. They need trees. No trees, no cicadas, which is why I still don't have them. We were fields in 1987 and thus none on 2004 and I thought we'd get some this year, but I guess they expand slowly. Lots of five miles away in mature wooded areas.

I never imagine many trees around DC at the founding, I bet it was all cleared, nobody would leave so much I harvested timber so close to the Potomac

I feel old being 42. thinking that the last time there cicadas I was 25 makes me feel older...thinking the next time they're out I'll be 59 makes me feel young
