Consistent with the view that the GOP future is non-Trump but not anti-Trump: Republican voters have diminishing interest in hearing from Trump, but remain mistrustful of Republican politicians who openly oppose him.https://twitter.com/BenjySarlin/status/1400146876448624641 …

Bob Dole is GHWB's fault not Reagan.

Makes no sense. Bush 41 lost in '92 and didn't even get 40% of the vote. He had zero influence on the party's nomination 4 years later. Dole had previous attempts in 1980 and 1988. His '88 run went further but Bush defeated him.

Trump remains the political and ideological leader of the party, along with Gaetz, Greene, Gohmert, Flynn, and various other insurrectionists. No one can oppose him. And the R base listens to Trump over anyone else. And the major R pundits, like Hugh Hewitt, or NRO, listen too.

Neither Gaetz nor Greene are the leaders of the GOP. Trump is, but it's not only about the "insurrectionists". Their influence is limited.

Don't remember Reagan being the frontrunner for the nomination in 2000 and 2004.
