If not for WWII and Korea, there is every chance by 1974, Ruth was already 3rd on the list behind Williams and Mays.

Hank Greenberg, served for nearly 4 years in WWII. It's unlikely he would have set many career records but it's possilble he could have broken Ruth's single season homer record. Ted Williams served in both WWII & Korea and his service may have cost him 150+ home runs.
