(a) "counterproductive" is not the same as "winning an election" (b) the most famous denouncers from 2016, Rubio and Cruz, went on to be toadies. That says a lot about them, not about denouncement as a strategy.
IIRC, I don’t think that strategy was really tried until it was too late. Everybody ignored him as a joke and trained their fire on each other.
The other presidential contenders, yes. But plenty of other loud voices did so. And a lot of them ended up effectively recanting in humiliating fashion.
