Cheney's stance has been admirable & the caucus needs & should tolerate dissenting views, occasionally even in leadership. But I'm inclined to agree that if she can't move off this topic as Mitch has, she needs to do that from the back benches.https://twitter.com/LPDonovan/status/1389569405701529603 …

As insane as it would be to sack Cheney for being inconveniently right, it doesn't seem like a tenable situation to have a leadership team publicly at odds at a time when the conference just wants to unite and plow forward. (Nor would I expect her to go along to get along.)

Mitch, properly & courageously, made his case in public for impeachment (it was the right thing to do), then counted noses & concluded he didn't have the votes. We don't expect more than that from heads of legislative caucuses.https://twitter.com/BenjySarlin/status/1389585439019896832 …

It very likely wouldn't have worked, but the key predictable moment behind this was McConnell not leading an actual effort to impeach Trump. There's now a Civil War with only one side. R's are divided between pro-Trump and meh-Trump-but-let's-not-fight-over-it, not pro and anti. https://twitter.com/mkraju/status/1389565587303632900 …

We sometimes expect & need presidents & governors to stand alone against the tide when they are right. It's part of an executive's job. The job of leader of a legislative caucus is different. Your caucus *is* your power.

It's hilarious that you act like your job is to play legislative whip rather than comment on the ethics of Republicans whitewashing the Jan 6 insurrection. Even funnier is the pretense that the rest of us will go along. We won't.

*My* job is fundamentally different than the job of a legislative caucus leader.

Legislative caucus leader is a secondary role. The primary role is Member of Congress, and is the role that involved swearing an oath. No person who swore that oath can faithfully serve under that oath and simultaneously appease the Big Lie. They must lead their caucus to truth.
