Slavery is even enshrined in the confederate constitution. You could not join for another reason, without it. They knew why they were leaving.

It amazes (or appalls) me that people can deny this. On its own, the record of the Montgomery convention shows that slavery was the raison d'etre for the Confederacy. Everything else was in service to that.

Preservation of slavery was specifically noted in many of the Southern States secession resolutions btw.

I often wonder what the world would look like if Lincoln had allowed those states to secede.

Great question. And, if Lincoln knew in 1861 the death and destruction resulting from war, would he have let them go. Recently, I was convinced that with no war and secession accepted, other parts of US would have broken off.
