This assumes all degrees are useless or a bad deal. Some are. For me, my dad didn't have the money to finish college, so became a cop; my degree got me into law school (plus I met my wife in college). Of course, I had academic scholarships, so I graduated college with no debt except the $2,500 I borrowed to buy a computer with no hard drive (ah, 1989). Left me free to go into serious debt for law school. Fewer people have that option today, at least at top schools.

I got an English degree, and then I made money writing. I DIDN'T get an MLS, but while in grad school I met and married an aerospace engineer.
