The biggest problem was Kessler not considering that acreage did not translate into cash wealth for black farmers, esp. after AAA cotton allotments that went to white farmers. Pete Daniel's Lost Revolutions gets into this, as does Anne Moody re: Madison County, MS.

Wealth for black property owners was always more precarious than it was for whites, whether bc of restrictive covenants, redline barriers against low-interest mortgages, or AAA cotton allotments. Problem started even earlier with the collapse of the Freedmen's Bank.
