Popular democracy is, as I have argued, an essential part of the theory of modern conservatism. I just recognize that it is of less value as an end in itself than, say, individual liberty or fundamental human rights. Oh really? 2 of last 3 presidential wins by GOP - minority of popular vote. Dem House candidates consistently receive majority of votes yet GOP controlled House 10 of last 14 times. Dem Senate candidates get majority of votes yet GOP controlled Senate 8 of last 14 times.

While it's certainly the liberal position that voting should be easy, universal (or neary so), and decisive, it isn't the liberal position that every office needs to be elected or every decision of import needs to come from an elected official. There's no contradiction there.
