no this map is wrong Turkey controlled Egypt and Libya until 1912/1914 and it has Spanish controlling a way too big part of west africa
Turkey's control of Egypt was entirely nominal after 1882.

In college this is definitely nothing new. In High School in America (in 2000s) they plain skipped over everything from the Civil War to WW2, with a brief mention of Ellis Island and WW1
I am big critic of how we teach history in school but please we took tests on this. I feel the same way about how America hid the fact the founders often owned slaves. I cracked this "hidden" truth when I was 12, read serious takes on the Slavery question 12 years old!

Yeah but to be fair, UK has been worse at teaching their history. I know so many Brits whose education went from Battle of Hastings to Colonization and then without any introduction ever, USA just started *existing* over there 
I can see why. British history is a lot longer, so you have to move fast to get it all in.
