Why are so many new laws needed? Isn’t the burden on those who want to change the system, in the absence of evidence of voter fraud of any consequence, despite years of prosecutors, politicians, academics, think tanks, a presidential commission and the DOJ looking for it?
One, Democrats are trying to change the system in far more sweeping ways. Two, the voting system itself is changing, so what Republicans are doing is mostly to adapt existing safeguards to new methods of voting.
Fair enough. But restricting early voting, requiring specific forms of voter IDs, eliminating ballot boxes, shifting authority from county officials and state election officials to state legislatures—seem to me to suggest purposes that go beyond efficient administration.
Well, there's a lot of moving parts, some of which are about administration, not voting. One of the frustrations of state govts is getting blamed for things done by localities, so they are understandably eager to assert more control. Early voting is itself a recent innovation.
