Unfortunately @baseballcrank misreads the GA statute. The prohibition on giving food and water isn’t limited to those who are trying to influence voters. Nor is it limited to candidates and their staff. And so all of the other state laws he identifies are inapposite.

Politico article 2012: [Rick] Hasen
@rickhasen said (about freebies offered to people for voting), "These things can be targeted to help voters known to vote for one candidate or another," Hasen said, raising the specter of corruption. What changed?1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

This law does more than offer "freebies" for voting. It sweeps broader than that. It makes
@PizzaToThePolls a crime. It makes a crime for a person in line to share a granola bar or a bottle of water with another.8 replies 6 retweets 22 likes -

His argument at the time is that offering it for voting - regardless of *who you vote for* is illegal under federal law.https://www.politico.com/blogs/under-the-radar/2012/11/voting-related-giveaways-clash-with-federal-law-148481 …

I would not want to go into court with only the defense that *people waiting on line to vote* are non-voters.

No, my point is that so long as food is offered to anyone in the vicinity--not just line waiters--there is no problem.

So, a self-service box would be fine; approaching people on line would not. Sounds familiar!

That is a matter of regional dispute. Here in NY, we say "on line."
