Are we supposed to think that this headline somehow makes the guy look good? It refers to him as "the shooting suspect." The nitpicking is bizarre.https://twitter.com/joshtpm/status/1372331537677574145 …

Not nitpicking. There is a very observable pattern by which the coverage of white far right murderers quickly moves to exploring their life story, background, discontents etc when coverage is markedly different for almost everyone else who commits acts of mass violence/terror

Is there any actual evidence of such a pattern? e.g. studies analyzing media coverage?

I'm in the business of analyzing news. I think pattern is clear. There may be studies. But those tend to be useless. You can disagree (based on I'm not sure what) but my standard is not to what for a study by a polisci grad student with too much time on her hands before comment.

Do you think that perhaps people's perceptions of patterns are influenced by what they're looking for?

People look at the backgrounds precisely so they can hunt for things that confirm their priors when motivations are not obvious.

Did he play Dungeons & Dragons? We haven’t blamed that for anything in a while, it’s due.

Or Space Invaders? Maybe Motley Crue?

Anyway, TPM’s claim is easily falsified. Plenty of press coverage excusing Omar Sheriff Thornton’s mass murder with false accusations of racial discrimination.
