17,000 people in the whole Bay Area in 1769. Maybe half that by 1835. And they were scattered.

Interesting. I lived in that area, and you couldn't have a more hospitable area for hunter/gathering than the Bay.

Fresh water was hard to come by. Terrible place for farming. Couldn't support communities of any size until the Gold Rush.
