Unlike a lot of places, the Native American population in the Bay Area was really sparse even when the Spanish first arrived.

Define sparse. There are many building projects and developments that are held up in the area because Native American remains are found or archeological objects of interest discovered.

17,000 people in the whole Bay Area in 1769. Maybe half that by 1835. And they were scattered.
