It bores most people - I just find is fascinating because I love the history behind it all. I was in my 30s before I found out the Gospels were written by anonymous authors and long after Jesus lived. Yes, part of that is on me for not looking, but it was just never mentioned.

John is generally assumed to have been written maybe half a century after the death of Jesus, well after the other Gospels. Mark was very likely written before the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in 70AD.

Markan Priority is pretty irrefutable, especially given how Luke/Acts and Matthew borrow from it. It also is pretty clearly written prior to the end of the Temple and sourced from someone within living memory of Jesus.

John is of course the interesting one, as it's not synoptic. I tend to believe the theory that while it obvious was not written by the Apostle John, it descends from his 'school' of Christian practice, which is why it had such prestige despite obviously differing so much.

The early Christians and church leaders weren't fools; something that differs so much from Mark, Matthew & Luke wouldn't have been allowed into the canon unless it had some real force of credibility behind it. Most likely answer is relationship to John & his proselytes.

Right. It may well be John's story even if he's not the one who wrote it down.

Historically there’s a lot of evidence that John played a very large role in the writing of both that and his smaller letters. Many scholars consider 1 John as the first Bible commentary, reflecting on John’s gospel letter.

Given their late dating (and hey, let's be honest, people didn't tend to live too long back then) I don't think they were written by him at all but that they do reflect his teachings and the beliefs of the Christians in his community.

Once you got past infancy, your life expectancy wasn't awesome, but the idea of John living into his 80s or even 90s given that he made it into his 20s (i.e. was around for Jesus) isn't completely fanciful either.

There were always people who lived that long, even then.

There were also people like Polycarp and Ignatius who studied directly under John and attested to the veracity of his ministry and writings.

Psalm 90, verse 10: "The days of our years are three score and ten."
