Those are typically subjects that are not spoken of in church, but when people are interested there are outlets for it. Perhaps Catholics teach that, but I have never seen that talked about before with regards to it being a mainstream thing that they teach all members.

Historically there’s a lot of evidence that John played a very large role in the writing of both that and his smaller letters. Many scholars consider 1 John as the first Bible commentary, reflecting on John’s gospel letter.

Given their late dating (and hey, let's be honest, people didn't tend to live too long back then) I don't think they were written by him at all but that they do reflect his teachings and the beliefs of the Christians in his community.
