If you're asking the Church to walk away from the words of Christ in the Gospels and the letters of Paul, you're asking it to walk away from its very reason for existing.

The thing is that Paul was a man just like everyone else who was trying to push his narrative on how a church should be founded. Again, that doesn't mean that there's no value in his writings, but Paul was writing his own worldview as a man - not as God.

That has, at no point in its history, been the position of the Catholic Church.

Treating the epistles as just the writings of men, not words ordained or inspired by God. https://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p1s1c2a3.htm …

OK I thought that's what you meant. I guess for me this is where I historically just can't agree. It could be inspired by Jesus' teachings, but of course Paul is going to implement what he thinks is best within the teachings. It's the reasons we have 4 Gospels w/ contradictions.

@baseballcrank has the better of this argument. The history of American Christianity is basically: church gets big, church goes soft, church declines. This is why the main churches at the Founding are obsolete, but churches that hold the line are growing (e.g. Mormons).

As I said, if they continue to maintain a hardline stance, they will decline. The Mormon church is effectively stagnant and has about a 30% activity rate... it's an example of a church where the younger generations are just not willing to accept the historical/doctrinal problems

Twitter isn't the best place for complex arguments, but I think this an overly simplistic diagnosis. What's more, you're missing the point, which is that the will of God doesn't bend to society's contemporary vanities. True Christians will always take the truth over popularity.

But then you have to define what a True Christian is. Is it a Catholic who believes in a divinely inspired Bible or Mormon who believes the Book of Mormon is a historical testament of Jesus? I just don't agree with the 'one true Christian' idea- there are many ways to believe.

I can't tell you what makes a true Mormon; I respect them as people and as an organization, but theologically they are heretics. (And they'd rightly regard me the same way!) But if you don't believe the Bible is divinely inspired, you're not a real Catholic.

So if each religion regards every other as heretical, who’s to judge which is correct? And doesn’t this issue call into question the validity of being divinely “chosen”? Faith & religion is nonsense, a delusion that impoverishes, fetters the imagination & wastes time

I agree with all of that - my point at the outset was never about what makes a true Catholic, but to say that I believe the teachings on LGBT people are harmful and that I believe they will change over time because younger generations are not going to accept those stances IMO.

I think we're basically in agreement here. For the purposes of this thread, I'm talking about the nature of truth, not which denomination has it. The fact is that we have scripture, and it tells us the truth, and the truth is not to be altered to keep the pews full.

I think so too and I agree it's way too complex for 280 character replies. I do think that church's will eventually soften/change stances to keep members b/c some of the positions (esp with LGBT) are just untenable, but I think that will be a very gradual change over generations
