Not only was this guy a Civil War vet who sneaked into the First World War, he crossed the border to join another country's army to do it before the U.S. was in the war.

On the flip side is Peter Joseph Osterhaus, born and raised in Rhenish Prussia, an 1848er, Union general in the Civil War, and then returnee to united Germany (after first being appointed as consul to France in 1866). Also quite a life, but he didn't join the German Army, did he? Civil War era had all sorts of amazing cross-border adventurers. Union Army in particular was full of them.
