I usually bid in the last 3-5 seconds. Doesn’t give them a chance to think about how much they would be annoyed to lose out over a trifling sum

That means you are likely to lose to someone who bids at last second. If you really want an item and know how much you are willing to pay at most, best way is to set up a proxy bid for that max amount in last 5-10 seconds.

Did you know know most auction bidders on eBay end up paying more than they would for an identical fixed price item? (If available, of course)

Ships for a war game. Two similar prior lots I was bidding on went for a good deal more than I paid, so it worked out well for me this time.
