A fantastic speech. Lincoln was the first president to attain the office by his words & arguments. http://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/cooper.htm …https://twitter.com/librarycongress/status/1365708544230764545 …

On this day in 1860, Abraham Lincoln made an electrifying speech at the Cooper Institute in Manhattan. The address gained him the political support that led him to the presidency. Which other ones did? First cut would be Wilson and Reagan perhaps? (and we're going to acknowledge that there were always other raw party/temporal factors, but where words/arguments were far more prominent)

Reagan made himself a national figure with the 1964 speech, but he was also governor of the largest state for 8 years.

Dan, I think Benjy is talking about Obama....the liberal left has undertaken a deeply researched, informed history of US conservatism. Conservatives learn about conservatism from it. How's the analogue project going on your side?

I know he was referring to Obama. Who was, of course, no Lincoln by any stretch, least of all the content of his arguments. I wrote many times back then about the absurdity of his efforts to claim that parallel.

Um--why the gratuitous, utterly off point slam? Nobody said he was Lincoln--least of all him. He admired Lincoln, like many US presidents, but, unlike many of them, had also deeply read him. Also if you don't understand Obama's project of civic nationalism you can't really

I'm not even a big fan of the "actually existing" Obama presidency--from the left of it, it failed in several ways, as his own memoir makes clear. But you haven't even earned the right to rip it if you don't get what he was up to and why.

I guess I'd say to you: you and other modern conservative intellectuals oppose "civic nationalism" don't you? It'd be interesting if you would explicitly express that in an essay. So you diminish Obama without really substantively engaging him--which is intellectually unserious.

I don't have time for yet another of these all-day off-the-original-topic arguments, but you're either forgetting or deliberately glossing over the point I was talking about, which is the Obama-personally-as-Lincoln stuff from 2007-09.

I’m not forgetting that, but qualifying appropriately so as to properly reduce it’s significance as a historical episode. In fact, there was arguably even *more* Obama as FDR stuff. The point is just that you weirdly decided to trash Obama’s “content” (your word) without actually
