His Cincinnati speech from September 1859 (in response to Douglas - billed as Lincoln-Douglas 2.0) set up Lincoln’s national credibility for 1860. Cooper Union confirmed it, with much more rhetorical flourish than at Cincy.
Yeah. My point is the use of national media to elevate a guy who was neither a major DC figure, war hero, nor a powerful party insider (Pierce had been the latter, to some extent the former two).
