Mitt Romney holds the career record for most victories in the CPAC Straw Poll. And he was, to anyone paying attention at the time, exactly the same guy he is now.

Mitt Romney has always been the person he needs to be, to accomplish the immediate objective dictated by his personal, professional and political ambitions.

Really? How does any of what he's done recently helped his political ambitions?

He crafted a moderate persona for to run for governor in a liberal state. Next, he was Mitt, the budget hawk to challenge Obama. On his next run he styled himself an "extreme" conservative. Once Trump won, he positioned himself as a NeverTrump savior for the GOP. No North Star.

His strategies have all been successful, in both business and politics. But cumulatively, they reveal a hopelessly malleable political core.

How does being NeverTrump help him politically or serve any ambition?

It ingratiates him with the left, as well as the formidable GOP establishment, donor class and Senate leadership. Originally, it positioned him to replace Trump after the widely anticipated Russiagate take-down. He's stuck with that disguise until he comes up with a new one.

Or, Occam's razor, he's an old grandpa who DGAF and votes how he wants to, which, unsurprisingly, isn't Trumpy.

I suspect the current iteration of Romney is the closest we'll ever see to the real Romney, but the habits of decades of tacking with the wings are hard to shake.

Every politician has to tack. Nothing wrong with that. It's the gall of the quadrennial makeovers. The great ones reveal an authentic core, which appeals to everyone, even their enemies.

Yes. Which is why Mitt was never good at this.
