One strange thing about casting Trumpism simply as a continuation of Perotism is that Ross Perot was obsessed with the budget deficit. Trump was...not.

Rhetorically yes, although its not clear what polices Perot would have enacted to reduce the deficit. We certainly saw Trump’s version of protectionism failed to bring the debt down. I’d also also say Trump is in a line from Pat Buchanan, not Perot.

Presidents can't impact the deficit. That's Congress's job. We have to quit this fiction that Presidents can control the federal budget.
