There were a bunch of things going on, and as in 2016, the dynamics of the field mattered a lot. But also, just as is true of Trump, they were the candidates the voters chose.

It annoys me that you reversed the chronological order. Almost as much as when people decided Romney was the conservative stalwart in 2008 but a RINO in 2012.

There was no way any GOP candidate was going win for president in 2008--which doesn't change the fact that McCain ran a bad campaign...although it was a better campaign than Trump 2020.
